- The length of the cartoons are usually shorter in length & can be a part of series whereas animations can range from short films to feature-length productions.
- Cartoons are often aimed at children & have a lighthearted tone & subject matter. On the other hand, Animations can be targeted at a wider range of audiences, from children to adults.

Whereas, cartoon basically refers to two things. It can either refers to a simple, non-realistic or humorously exaggerated characters. An artist who creates drawing (cartoon) is called a cartoonist.
Animation is the technique used to create cartoons. On the other hand, cartoon is a product made using animation. Animations can deal with mature & series themes whereas cartoons often depict superheroes, animal, mysteries, etc. Some popular examples are Tom & Jerry, Mickey Mouse, Scooby Doo, etc.
